Getting Started

For Students

  1. Sign in with your Google or Microsoft account, or open the app in Microsoft Teams. The first time, Home offers a quick video tour, and you can see the tours again in Settings
  2. Home has two Game Modes, Vocabulary Builder and Spelling Quiz. Pick one to see your word lists in it, and what comes next on each
  3. Open a word list to see its map: milestones of lists to work through, one list at a time. Find more word lists in the Word List Library
  4. Use Explore the Words to see what each of your words means, with helpers to remember it by, or for extra goes at any game on any of your lists. A word you get right in a game there is learnt too
  5. From Home, collect words in your Word Log, look words up in the Dictionary, and see your week in Track your progress
  6. Keep your day streak going and earn badges as you learn

For Teachers

  1. Sign in with your school account. A guided setup opens the first time: your school's details, your teacher tools and your first list, in about three minutes. Settings has it again, with a short tour of your tools
  2. On Manage Lists, make your school's word lists (one at a time, or many at once with Bulk import lists), and place them on the milestones of each year's roadmap
  3. Give a list a date to open, choose the games your year's word list plays, and switch on ready-made word lists such as Atom 11+ for a year, in Vocabulary Mode, Spelling Mode or both
  4. Home shows each year group's words learnt and active students, with the change over the last 7 days, and anything waiting for you, such as students asking to join
  5. On Student Overview, see each student's progress on the word lists they have active, list by list, and Focus Words, the words your class finds tricky. Open a student for the detail
  6. On Approvals, approve students who ask to join your school
  7. Use the Student | Teacher switch beside your name to see the app as your students do

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign in?

If you're using the app in Microsoft Teams, you'll be signed in with your Teams account. On the web, sign in with your Google or Microsoft account.

Do I need to sign in?

Yes. Signing in saves your progress, so your word lists, Word Log and badges are there on every device you use.

How do I create a word list?

Go to the Word List Library, then Your own custom lists, under the ready-made word lists. Press New list, give it a name, add its words and choose its games, and play it in Explore the Words. Teachers make their school's lists on Manage Lists.

What is the Word Log?

The Word Log is your own collection of words: ones you meet in books, or find in the dictionary. For each word, write what it means and a sentence of your own, and our AI checks them for you. Emoji stories, silly sentences and word origins are there too, to help the word stick.

What are word lists?

Your word lists are on Home, under Vocabulary Builder and Spelling Quiz. Each one is a map of milestones, each with a few lists of words. Open a list to play its games: the Vocabulary Game in Vocabulary, and the Spelling Game and Tile Game in Spelling. A list is done once every word is learnt in its games, and a milestone is completed once every list on it is done. Explore the Words is there too, whenever you want to see each word's meaning and helpers. You may have your school's word list, set by your teachers, as well as ready-made ones such as Atom 11+ (words for the 11+ exam) and High Frequency Words (the words used most often in reading and writing), and you can add more from the Word List Library. Complete every milestone of Atom 11+ or High Frequency Words to earn its trophy.

How does the Tile game work?

Build each word from letter tiles, with its meaning there to help. Every word starts at Learning. A right answer moves it up to Familiar and the next one to Mastered, so two right answers master a word. A wrong answer never moves a word down, and a hint doesn't move it at all. The higher the level, the more letters you choose from. On a word list, a list is done in the Tile Game once every word on it is Mastered.

Does Explore the Words count towards my word lists?

Yes. Get a word right in one of its games and it's learnt, on every list it's in, so your word lists move on too. Get a new or tricky word wrong and it goes on your tricky list, but a word you've learnt stays learnt there, even if you get it wrong. Word Helpers on their own don't count, as looking at a word isn't answering it. Explore the Words counts towards your day streak too.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We use industry-standard security including HTTPS encryption, secure authentication, and encrypted database storage. We never sell your data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Is the app free?

Yes, Vocabulary Builder is completely free for students, teachers, and schools.

How do I sign up my school?

If you'd like to bring Vocabulary Builder to your school, you can register your interest via the banner on the Settings page. Once registered, we'll review your details and come back to you with further information when we're ready to onboard the next round of schools. There's no commitment required at this stage — it simply lets us know you're interested.

What devices does it work on?

Vocabulary Builder works on any device with a web browser - desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It's fully responsive and optimized for Microsoft Teams on all platforms.

Can I use it offline?

The app requires an internet connection to fetch word definitions and sync your progress.
